Orellana Community REDD+ project
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) with Kichwa communities in the Orellana province in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region.
The Ecuadorean Amazon Region is suffering from endemic deforestation. In this community REDD+ project, deforestation is reduced in close cooperation with the local communities. The 30,000 hectares of forest in the project area belong to three Kichwas communities. Each community has divided their land into small farms, each consisting of a patch of agricultural land and a patch of primary forest. This primary forest is degrading as a result of selective logging practices in the region.
Face the Future/PROFAFOR is working with the Kichwas communities on implementing a project that will result in reduced deforestation and forest degradation. The resulting avoided deforestation will translate into carbon revenues, which will provide an alternative source of income for these communities. The carbon benefits of the project will be validated and verified against the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). The environmental and community benefits will be validated and verified against the Climate Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standard.
