Saloum Mangrove reforestation
The Sine-Saloum Delta lies in the heart of Senegal and it is of great ecological and economical importance. The marvel of this delta is that it combines the character of a wetland, marine, estuarine, lake and marshland. As such it fulfils one of the many roles of the Biosphere Reserve by “ensuring the preservation of a representative sample of fauna and flora species of the world for the benefit of present and future generations”. Spanning an area of 300,000 ha, 60% of the delta is covered by mangroves which support a variety of livelihood activities to the local communities such as fishing, fuel wood, tourism, oyster collection, honey production, etc.
However, the disappearance of vast expanses of mangrove has resulted in an equal loss of these livelihood activities for the many hundreds or thousands of inhabitants.
Face the Future has completed the feasability study for this project which is currently on the market. The proposed project consists of the rehabilitation of degraded mangrove areas through reforestation. During the last three decades Senegal has lost more than 20% of its mangrove areas. The project will plant at least three mangrove species in the formerly deforested mangrove areas.
Project activities: The project activities will take place in at least 3 different communities in the Fatick region: Djirnda, Djilor and Bassoul. Within these communities 26 villages are proposed to participate, 5 of which are located in Djirnda, 18 in Djilor and 3 in Bassoul. Sizes of the planting plots will vary from 0,5 to 5 hectares. The land on which the project will take place is owned by the communities.
The project is aimed at improving local communities’ well being and buffer the effects of climate change through the restoration of mangrove ecosystems of the Sine-Saloum Delta. The objectives of the project include:
- Climate change mitigation through sustainable sequestration of carbon.
- Mangrove ecosystem restoration (with positive social, ecological and economical impacts).
- Income generation and livelihood improvement for local communities.
